Tarte au Citrone

In the mood for christmas

Candlelights, building snowmen, decorating with little angels and baking lots of yummy treats. Recently I made a batch of delicious saffron biscottis. Here´s how to make them. 

150 g almonds

75g butter

3 dl sugar

3 eggs

0,5 g saffron

7 dl plain white flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

a dash of pure vanilla

Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Chop the almonds coarsely. Blend butter, sugar and saffron. Add the eggs, one at a time while beating. Mix flour, baking powder, vanilla and the almonds seperately, then blend gently with the dough. Shape the dough into two logs, the same length as the baking plate. Cover the plate with a bakingsheet and bake in the lower half of the oven for 30 min. Remove from the oven and let the logs cool slightly, reduce oven temperature to 120 degrees C. Cut into diagonal slices. Put them back into the oven with the cut side down,let them dry for about 30 min or more if needed.

When I want to taste a bit of summer, I make these little lavender dreams, using the lavender scented sugar I made this summer. Lavender, sugar and a jar is all you need to make your own  Since I have lavender growing in my garden I simply pick some buds, just before the flowers open and use them frresh. I mix the lavender and sugar and let it sit for a month, shaking the jar now and then. Here´s how to make dream cookies,

100g butter

1dl sugar

2 dl lavender sugar

1dl rape seed oil

1 teaspoon ammonium carbonate

4dl plain white flour 

Mix butter and sugar, add oil, little at a time. Mix the ammonium carbonate with the flour seperately and blend all the ingredients together. Shape the dough into small cookies, put them on a baking paper sheet and bake for 20 minutes, 150 degrees C.

“We didn't want to make a traditional perfume image, but something more real and raw. I have done loads of self-portraits in the past – it's very much part of my work and how I started out. AnOther asked if I would be interested in doing a self-portrait for the scent and I loved that idea. So I found a nice five star hotel, checked in there on my own with only my cameras and a load of film and a couple of Chloé outfits, and spent the evening playing around. I shot the images on Polaroid film. I love how it is instant so that I at least have some idea of where I am heading when I can't look through the lens and I love the vintage feeling of them."

Lina Scheynius is favorite photographer of mine, her work is personal and intimate. Using her camera she captures everyday moments in a way that is pure poetry. Her photos are raw and pure and full of emotion, they make me wanna get lost in her pale colored world. Above are the images she took for the campaign for Another Magazine´s first fragrance Another 13.

Every season I used to go through the shows at style.com, from the runways of New York to Paris, well that was some years ago. My interest has faded, mind you I never really cared about the big trends and I´m not in the fashion business either so that may have something to do with it. Nowadays I might summon up some interest only for the Paris shows. Yes , yes I´m smitten with Hannah McGibbons work at Chloé and Phoebe Philo for Céline. One thing I do like to follow though are the streetstyle bloggers like Maya Villiger and Tommy Ton,I find inspiration by looking at the style of the people they catch through their lenz much more than I do looking at the clothes on the runways.

Now that´s all good, but what I really wanted to write about was how I´m more interested in style and in clothes than in fashion.I find inspiration in films, music, litterature, photography and in people. But for me, style is foremost about being comfortable in your own skin, I want it to be me who wears the clothes and not the other way around.I know what I like and I know what I want to wear. I want beautiful clothes that are well made, where there is extra attention paid to the details. Clothes in natural fibers as they feel the softest against your skin. Classic, simple pieces that are made to last a lifetime, to be worn and torn until they fall apart. Perhaps that seems boring, but I like this utilitarian approach.

I´m getting new glasses and I want something classic. Now, I was contemplating Ray-Ban´s wayfarers (tortoiseshell but of course),but then Shuron´s Freeway caught my eye. Resembling the wayfarers but with a slight cateye silhouette. Aren´t they great?! And they actually predate Ray-ban, the company being around since 1865.

Summer, summer, summer, how I love thee! Growing up it felt like I spent all my time on the beach and to be more precise, in the water. Summer meant that I, a human girl somehow transformed into a seal. That is how I remember my childhoodsummers and this is also how I´ve been spending a huge part of my summerholiday. In the water. Splash! But even a seal got to eat something and summer means that you can gorge on all the fresh vegetables and fruit that is now around.

I like to make  Ratatouille and with the first batch I make a soup. Cut aubergine,  tomatoes and zucchini into thick slices. Take the biggest casserole you´ve got and    pour some oliveoil in it and then layer the aubergine, followed by   tomatoes and last zucchini. Continue layering until the top. Inbetween   the layers, put garlic cloves and parsil, thyme, basil. Don´t forget   salt and pepper. Simmer at very low heat for about 1-2 hours. Now you pour the excess water from the vegetables into another casserole, put some oliveoil in it and some of the vegetables. Finish with freshly chopped herbs and if you like some smoked or dried meat.

Yes I know it´s the thing to say, but she really is! I don´t really know how to describe it so for lack of words I´m just gonna say that she was pure elegance and grace without ever trying to be anything else than what she was. She once said that she didn´t really care for jewelery, diamonds and pearls, the we, her children were the only jewels she needed. I love looking at the old photos of her, my brother, and cousin, from the late seventies.

In a way it´s more about dreaming than anything else, of course we all wear them as a necessity, and I do love the way certain materials such as the softest washed cotton or cashmere feels against your skin. Further, I love the details of a garnment, the ones that make the piece and that you have to get up really close to even appreciate. Still it´s about something else, I don´t really have to own that certain Anastase coat or that Chloé dress, instead the image of it lingers in my mind together with the whole imaginary context I´ve placed it in. May it be music, films, literature or a persons appearance that inspire, all these little clues form a world of it´s own that I daydream about. In real life I wouldn´t mind wearing a pyjama all day, I´m really unfashionable like that, but it should be made of the softest cotton or silk. So you see, I´m not a collector of real things, I´m more of a collector in my mind, a dreamer perhaps.

As if it were a painting, dreamlike and suggestive. The soft light and grainy quality defines her style, those traits are also what makes her a favorite photographer of mine. Sarah Moon was the first woman to photograph the Pirelli calendar in 1972, and an highly unusual choice at that. I feel drawn to these images beacause of the intimate atmosphere she manages to create with such subtleness. They have such a romantic and antique character over them, from out of this world.

When at work, my hands are occupied with thousands of things, but in my mind I am free to create stories. The reminiscent of the past, fantasies and daydreams comes to life as I retell bits and pieces to myself. My language is altogether fluent, with the right words I manage to create sentences that mean something, that need to be saved in order to make me remember who I am. When I get home and my hands are finally available for me to write it all down on paper, then there is nothing, everything that was on my mind has gone away. Where did it all go? I have lost my own language,  the words won´t come out right, no matter how hard I try. I am unable to create meaningful sentences that cohere with what I want to communicate. It is like I am on the verge of losing myself as all the words and their meaning are irretrievably lost. What happended?

The delicate texture, intimacy and beauty of washed silk, cotton poplin, a silk lining,lace details, wowen cotton, stripes, a sailor collar, a pair of flounce sleeves. Hanging in my closet or on my shoulders; two dresses and a blouse. They feel so soft against my skin, flowing and when I take them of at night the trace of my perfume, of myself and the day gone by lingers in the fabric making them a part of an ongoing story.

The soft colourpalette, the details and the casual silhouette, it´s all part of that certain Chloé look that I´ve come to love so much. It´s feminine, sometimes girly, sometimes romantic, sometimes sophisticated, but always made to make you feel comfortable in your own skin.

For the love of chocolate

Chocolate makes the world go around Cake

50 g butter
½ dl rapeseed oil (or any other neutral vegetable oil)
2 eggs
2 dl dark muscovadosugar
2 ½ dl flour
4 tablespoons cocoapowder
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons bakingsoda
50g dark chocolate

Use a cake tin that is about 20 cm in diameter and cover it with a baking paper sheet. Melt the butter. Beat eggs and sugar in a bowl, add the melted butter and the oil. Blend flour, cocoa, vanilla and bakingsoda, add to the mix. Put the dough in the tin, add the chocolate squares and bake for 25 min, 150 degree C (302 degree F). Let the cake cool well before eating, serve with whipped cream and raspberries ( or eat it like it is).

Apple Crumble Pie
6 thinly sliced apples
100g butter
2 dl rolled oats
1 dl flour
½ dl sugar
cinnamon
cardamon
vanilla

Mix the flour, rolled oats, sugar, vanilla and cardamom together in a bowl, add the butter and work into crumbles with your fingers, cover the bottom of the pie plate with nearly half of the crumble mixture.
Arrange the apple slices on top of the crumbles and sprinkle some cinnamon on them, layer until you´re out of apples.

Put the rest of the crust on top of the appleslices, bake in the oven for 30 min, 225 degree C (425 degree F).

Top with whipped vanilla cream and eat while it´s still warm!

Almond Biscuits
150 gram ground almonds
½ dl sugar
vanilla
cardamom
1-2 eggwhites
almonds

Mix ground almonds, sugar, vanilla and cardamom together in a bowl. Beat the egghites into a stiff foam and put into the almond mix. Form into slants and finish with putting an almond on top. Bake in the oven for 6-8 min, 225 degree C ( 425 degree F).

In one of them, artist Mercedes Helnwein invites you into her studio, showing us her work in progress as she prepares for an upcoming show. Her work is beautiful and eerie, the photorealistic pencil drawings of women are stuck in my mind.

With her words only, she pictures a rainy day so beautiful, makes it enviable. Repetto flats on, a trench, a scarf and a large umbrella protecting you from the raindrops sure makes a pretty uniform.

It made me think about one of my favoritemovies; Les Parapluies de Cherbourg and how much I adore the costumes of Catherine Deneuve´s character Geneviève Emery. Certainly the whole film is a treasure, a beautiful masterpiece in every way. The photography, the music, the scenography and the vivid colours creates a dreamworld in wich the tragic lovestory unfolds. There´s so much beauty in this work and it makes me want to interpret it into my own life, epecially the look of the young and lovely Deneuve.

I got a haircut today and my hair went from looking like something reminiscent of this,

My favorite fragrance is for her by Narciso Rodriguez , it has been for some years now, if you like you could call it my signature scent. It starts of with a strong note of orange blossom, but then it slowly develops and reveals the warm amber, wood and honey flower notes, the drydown is all about the musc, and this is believe me a truly beautiful musc scent. It has a warm, soft and clean quality to it that can be described as liquid cashmere. It´s definetly a sexy, comforting and elegant perfume, and I get lots of compliments when I wear it (wich is quite often).

One of my main criterias when it comes to dressing is that the clothes I wear has to be comfortable. If I could I would happily prance around in my pajamas all day long, but unfortunately that´s not a choice, it wouldn´t do at all. That doesn´t mean that one can´t be comfy and welldressed at the same time. Take a look at these (sweat)pants from Isabel Marant, they´re perfect. And the way the woman above wears them together with a blazer and a simple white tee is just the way I would want to wear them. A simple casual style; sweatpants chic!

Some of the most stylish people I know happens to be models, something that comes along with the profession I suppose. A favorite of mine is belgian beauty Anouck Lepère, she of the high cheekbones and thick eyebrows. She really has a good eye for putting together amazing ensembles. She has a personal style that is effortles and she always manages to look so relaxed yet chic. She´s engaged to Jefferson Hack, editor and Kate Moss´s babydaddy, who has an equally cool and inspirational style. Together they are a couple with impeccable taste, don´t you think?

Today I wanted nothing other than to wear L´Ombre Dans L´Eau, wich is a beautiful and comforting scent, it brings to mind the memories of early summer with days spent in a green, lush garden filled with hidden roses. Diptyque describes it as "the scent of a green riverside garden" and I can´t but agree. It´s a green, earthy scent that starts of with a very realistic smell of blackcurrant leaf, then slowly developing and revealing a young rose note.I love the way it smells on me and how I catch a hint of the clean scent when I raise my arm to pull back my hair...

I keep my treasures.

The goldheartpendant that was given to me as a baby has followed me through the years. The bitemarks made by me as a little girl only adds to it´s charm.

The goldlink watch I inherited from my mother. She bought it as a gift to herself when she found out she was pregnant with me. I think it´s a timeless piece, so elegant yet simple.

Last but not least the single pearl that I got as an eleven year old girl when I was on holiday in Florida. Standing in front of an aquarium I picked out a mussel and when they opened the shell I saw the most beautiful pearl I´v e ever seen. A friend of the family, a goldsmith, helped me turn it into a pretty pendant.

My old neighbour has a figtree growing in his garden and sometimes when he sees a perfectly ripe fruit he picks it and hands it over to me. He explains how delicate the figs are and how you can only harvest them when they are fully ripe. (It looks like there´s gonna be some figs over for me this year too.)

What about horses

It´s been a while since I´ve been horseback riding and horses have been on my mind for some time now. I´m remembering how happy and free I felt that one summer when I was twelwe; the summer when I and a horse named Skrållan went galloping down the beach in the little village where I grew up.

That was actually the last time I sat on the back of a horse and I do miss it, so therefore I´m very much looking forward to this summer when I´m going on an icelandic horse riding tour. I´m counting the days...

Twentyseven years has gone by since one of the most talented and beautiful actresses the cinema has seen passed away. The enigmatic Romy Schneider once said; "I am nothing in life, but everything on the screen", and her personal life was indeed marked by several tragic events, yet her work was and still is some of the strongest I´ve ever seen. My favorite films with the legendary Romy are: La Piscine (The Swimmingpool) and L´Important C´est D´Aimer (That Most Important Thing: Love).

La Piscine

In Jacques Deray´s stylish psychological drama, the former lovers Romy and Alain Delon reunites on the screen. The film revolves around a love triangle and takes place at a villa belonging to the couple played by Romy and Delon. The two become four when Marianne´s (Romy) ex boyfriend shows up with his daughter, played by a young Jane Birkin (with a heavy english accent.)

L´Important C´est D´Aimer

This is another kind of love triangle filled with raw emotion in every scene. Servais Mont, a photographer, falls in love with Nadine Chevalier (Romy), an actress that never got her big break and now plays in seedy movies. She however is torned between the love for her husband and the new feelings she has for the photographer.

I press the bouquet with it´s delicate white bell shaped flowers into my face and breath in the sweet smell that announces that spring is here. The scent of Lily of the Valley evokes memories of sunfilled days gone by, spent laying on your back on the green grass, looking up at a clear blue sky. It´s a promise of warmer and brighter days. I dreamt of Brazil (it was beautiful)

When I was just a teeny tiny little thing growing inside my mothers womb, she danced and sang and laughed with my father in Brazil. (Maybe that´s why I love so many things brazilian?!)

I have a friend from Brazil that would make the sweetest chocolate/fudge candy called brigadeiro.
They´re often served at childrens birthday parties but everybody loves them!

Right now I´m listening to Caetano Velosos song and I think to myself: portuguese must be the most beautiful language in the world...along with french anyway!

Twenty years has passed since they found the body of homecoming queen Laura Palmer, wrapped in plastic on the river bank in the little town called Twin Peaks. I was still a little girl the first time I saw the series on television, I used to watch it together with my best friend at her house, and when it was time to go home I cykled the fastest I could in the dark, haunted by Bob. I have watched it many times since, it is still a surrealistic and eerie masterpiece. In my mind it is David Lynch´s best work, it continues to haunt me to this day.

Once upon a time I had a Liberty car print shirtdress, I loved it so much and when I see the same adorable print in the lining of this darling trenchcoat I fall in love all over again! If I was any good at sewing I would definitely purchase this print and make something with it.

The scent that lingers

I was twelve or thirteen, and as a gift I had gotten my first "real" perfume, Anais Anais. It smelled of springflowers; lily of the valley and hyacinth, and when I dabbed it on my wrists I felt so grown up. It had a soft, sweet and powdery scent, very romantic, and even if I don´t wear it any longer I still like to take a whiff now and then. It will always evoke the memories of that special period in my life.
